Below you’ll find a short biography of the founder, Jasenka Piljac Zegarac, PhD.
Science writing has been an important, creative, and inspiring part of my career for more than 15 years. My passion for creating high-quality scientific and medical communications solutions stems from witnessing the struggle to ”get published” in academia. Early on in my research career, I realized that the ability to produce research results in the lab, and communicate them in writing, are two separate talents.
I founded The Scientist Writer LLC with a mission to facilitate the dissemination of important scientific and medical research findings accurately, professionally, and effectively. I bring fifteen years of hands-on research and scientific writing experience to my business.
My research background is in biologically active compounds, natural products/new drug candidates, and nutraceuticals. As an academic researcher, I worked on quantifying the antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer and macromolecule-protective effects of natural products from plants. In the process, I gained hands-on experience with a wide range of biomedical assays and analytical techniques, including: RNA and DNA extractions and marker analyses, PCR, gel electrophoresis, antioxidant and free-radical quenching assays, cell culture, HPLC, LC-MS, and electroanalytical techniques.
My role as an ad-hoc reviewer for international peer-reviewed journals in the fields of biology, medicine, and food science and technology, has equipped me with the skills needed to efficiently source relevant literature from scientific literature databases such as PubMed/MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. I find these skills invaluable to my writing.
Throughout the course of my career as a scientific researcher and communicator, I have become well-versed in communicating complex research findings to lay audiences with little or no scientific background. With ease, I can filter and condense important findings so that your readers, both professional and lay, are not overwhelmed by unnecessary verbal clutter.
My publication track-record includes:
- 38 peer-reviewed original research papers
(9 in medical journals and 18 as the first and/or corresponding author)
- four book chapters (one published by Academic Press)
- more than 20 conference abstracts and posters
- more than 20 conference and science festival presentations
- popular science book Zinfandel: A Croatian-American Wine Story and promotional CD
- trade magazine feature articles
- newspaper articles
I hold a PhD degree in Biology from the University of Zagreb, Croatia, and a BS degree in Biochemistry (Honors) from UC Davis, California. In the past, I have held research positions at UC Davis, Washington State University and Michigan State University. I am a member of the American Medical Writers Association and have served on AMWA’s 2014 Medical Book Awards Committee for books in the public category.
